Writing about the experience of tango in Buenos Aires appears as easy, and is as elusive, as tango itself. And this difficulty is embodied in the city and the Porteños, the inhabitants, for whom it provides such a perfect setting.

I was determined that, the very day I arrived, I would plunge right into the dance scene. (The whole idea of being in Buenos Aires was so potentially intimidating.) I also wanted, as far as possible, to dance with Porteñas, by their rules.

The C.I.T.A.
crowd had come to town!
I felt the first breath of C.I.T.A., the wind that blew
through the Buenos Aires tango community, in Salon Canning on a
Friday evening. It seemed as if the character of the milonga had been
magically transformed. It was much more difficult to dance, since people
were using more space for figures, and it was all too easy to get kicked.
The C.I.T.A. crowd had come to town!
