Scent of A Woman

Written by Richard Lai, on 12-01-2008 12:16

Many of our members, ladies in particular, come to search and check out what Argentine Tango is and eventually dance tango, after watching this scene from the movie "Scent of a Woman". Here Al Pacino played a gentleman who cannot see. Yet he managed to lead a woman who does not know how to dance to dance with him.

Here is the scene: Scent of a Woman

The name of the song is "Por una cabeza" writen by Carlos Gardel who was one the masters of argentine tango music from the Golden Era, 1930's to 1950's. "Por una cabeza"is a horse race term and means "By a head"..and tell the story of a horse race fanatic gambler. It is these "traditonal" tango music and tango "feel" that inspired many of us to come to dance tango.

Festive December with Pablo & Noelia

Written by Richard Lai, on 12-11-2007 02:08

It is always our wish to have tango teachers with us to spend the Christmas holiday together, with workshops, guided practicas, dinners and milongas.

This year, we have Pablo Giorgini and Noelia Coletti, all the way from Buenos Aires, with us.  Originally, they would not come and we are fortunate enough to have overcome barriers and obstacles and make it happens.  They will be here in early December and teach group classes and private lessons, lead guided practicas and perform in our X'mas Milonga on 21st December.

Yet, there are some things we regret doing not good enough. Due to short notice and peak flying seasons, they are unable to arrive before  6th Dec and appear at our Milonguita@Fringe, and they have to fly back to Buenos Aires on 25th Dec and pass the Christmas on the plane.

Meanwhile, before we meet them in person, let's watch their recent dancing at Canning, the famous milonga in Buenos Aires :-

Tango Preface - Community Spirit

Written by Richard Lai, on 12-10-2007 11:31

preface_coleman_copyThe enrollment of our second Tango Preface in 2007, taught by Coleman and Fiona, lived up to our expectation.  Two dozens of students joined the club and took up the course. As usual, there are more ladies than men.

At the first class, we started the helpers system and summoned members to come to facilitate the running of the classes.  Though we do not and cannot guarantee an even number of dance partners, we tried our best to make sure each student has a partner to dance to.  And furthermore, each student has an experienced partner to dance to who helps him/her learns faster.

Among the helpers, there are young man members who took up our last tango preface in April, and there are those who attended the beginner and intermediate classes taught by Gonzalo & Mariel in June.  There are also experienced dancers who have been dancing for a couple of years.  And there are lady helpers too.

We are satisfied by the support from all these members and call it another success.  We can only achieve this with what we call Community Spirit.

And here we are, bonded for Tango.

Only at TangoTang.

Tango Steps danced to "Milonga"

Written by Richard Lai, on 17-07-2007 00:54

We all know Javier has his  own and unique style dancing “milonga”, especially those “milonga” steps that are not tango style.

But at the end of a “milonga” class, he demonstrated how he danced the Ocho Cortardo and Cambio de Frente to "Milonga" music.  He danced in a way that these tango steps look like they are created for “milonga” music in the first place.

Simple and Great Steps

Written by Richard Lai, on 09-07-2007 23:33

Javier and Anrdea taught us many things about tango while they were in Hong Kong, from posture, embrace, feeling and walking to steps.  Things that can only be felt and touched by the heart, things that can only be learnt by dancing with your partner and feeling the embrace.

Of all steps they taught, there are 3 steps that impressed me most.  I don't know whether they have names or not, I call them the Javier, the Lady Killer and the orcho cortado.

The Javier

Every timewe watch Javier dancing, we always see these steps.  They are so unique that they are literally the signature steps of Javier.  In fact, I have been practising these steps from Youtube for 9 months before I have the chance to learn them from Javier in person.
