Erica Lee
Erica Lee joined Tangotang in 2000 and started dj regularly in the late 2003 at Practicas, Fringe Club, various Milongas in town and also Aberdeen Boat Club. She loves happy tangos, valses and mostly of the classical pieces in golden age. Her favorite singers included Francisco Amor, Ernesto Fama, Alberto Podesta, Roberto Maida, Charlo and especially Ada Falcon. She is fond of the piano playing style of Firpo, Biagi and Pugliese. She has special interest in early recordings and tango history in Europe and Middle East countries and expanding the CD collection while travel. Besides dancing tango, she formed a tango band with friends, Tango Atipico exploring the different styles of tango music with their own arrangement.
Kitty Leung
Kitty began her tango journey at the end of 1999. It was the music of tango that drew her to the dance. She probably started playing music for the community in 2003 and soon developed a serious interest in the historical and cultural background of tango music. For Kitty, no two milongas are the same. Hence the key to DJing in a milonga is variety (orchestra styles of the Golden Age), flexibility, danceability, and sensitivity to the energy on the dance floor. She prefers well structured tandas and cortinas, the latter she believes contributes as much to a milonga as the tandas. Her music collection largely comes from her many visits to Buenos Aires and DJ friends in tango.
Recently Kitty devotes more of her time in promoting tango music an its culture in the hopes of enhancing the dance experience of the community. She designs the monthly ARTango Cultural Series for Tangotang and occasionally DJs in practicas and milongas. At the end of a long evening of great tango music, Kitty often finds herself delighted by a tanda of D'Agostino/Vargas which often reminds her that "it's the suspension between notes that makes the tango".
Emily Luk
Emily Luk, tango dj and milonga organizer in Hong Kong, promotes milonga culture and tango music in local tango community. Her philosophy of djing is to draw as many people as possible to the dance floor, make them enjoy all the tandas, and to introduce to the dancers the most beautiful music that she can discover. She never has a fixed set of tanda and aims at offering surprise to dancers each time while giving full respect to the traditional way of djing in BsAs. Her milonga is the only one in local community which emphasizes quality music and the rules of tanda/cortina.
She was invited to DJ at the Taipei Tango Festival in 2006, the Grand Milonga of Javier Rodriguez and Andrea Misse's visit in Seoul in 2007 and 2008.
Oskar Tang
Oskar Tang first encountered Argentine tango at the end of 2002 at HM, traveled to BsAs for 7 weeks in 2004 learning the dance, started djing on and off at Helena May practica since 2005 and occasionally providing dj service organized by others, Oskar now has over 2,000 songs mostly from golden age.
He is a traditionalist adhering to tanda structure, repeating t t m t t v, emphasizing on danceable music with good melody. He always plans the evening with varieties of mood, alternation between rhythmic and romantic, fast and slow, spicy and sweat, low and high energy, vocal and instrumental, popular and less known. Simple melody with clear beats is mostly played in the first hour of the evening for dancers to warm up. Mood transition between contiguous tandas is carefully arranged to ensure the flow. An evening is most likely ending with a dramatic tanda of Pugliese.
Richard Lai
Richard started dancing tango in 2003, DJing for the Club in 2007.
He is a traditional tango DJ and plays mostly traditional tango music. He observes the rules of composing tandas, he does not mix orchestras in a tanda, does not mix instrumentals with vocals, does not mix songs from different recording periods. Yet he knows rules are made to be broken, he sometimes mixes orchestras, instrumental and vocals, and songs from different eras to achieve the specific effect needed at a particular moment in a milonga, not to mention using alternatives and electronic tangos.
He is also a guest DJ at milongas and practicas organized by other hosts.
